Your local hosts in Yogyakarta

Java is not a checklist. It is a feeling you carry home.

Some places are best met before the rest of the world wakes: Borobudur at sunrise, Bromo at first light, the blue fire of Ijen. For over a decade, we have welcomed travellers to Java at these hours. Every journey is private, arranged from our home in Yogyakarta, with every detail attended to.

We had a truly exceptional day with Hibza! From the initial communication through to the actual day of the tour, everything was excellently organised. Hibza is without a doubt the best guide we have had the pleasure of meeting during our travels through Asia. He is incredibly friendly, highly knowledgeable, patient and always attentive – especially when dealing with us, as we are no longer the youngest. Admittedly, the programme was quite intensive: for the sunrise on Mount Bromo, we had to get up at 2 a.m. and drive by jeep to the viewing point. However, the breathtaking view more than made up for all the effort. The climb up Mount Ijen was also a significant challenge for us, especially the descent to the famous Blue Fire. Thanks to Hibza's support and the opportunity to travel in a 'Lamborghini', even this section of the route proved manageable for us. A huge thank you to Hibza and the entire team – we enjoyed this tour to the fullest!

Bromo, Ijen & Borobudur tour FAQ

Good questions, honest answers

Planning

How do I get from Jogja to Mount Bromo?

By private car the journey takes a long day, about 6 hours from Yogyakarta. Many guests prefer the train, a gentle way to see the Javanese countryside. We can also meet you in Surabaya or Malang, closer to Bromo.

How early do the volcano tours start?

Early, and for good reason. For the Bromo sunrise you leave by jeep around 2 a.m., and the Ijen hike starts in the middle of the night, because the blue fire is only visible in the dark. On the 3-day Bromo & Ijen tour, expect two short nights. Guests tell us the view repays every minute of lost sleep.

Can my trip end in Bali?

Yes. The Bromo & Ijen tour finishes in East Java near the ferry to Bali, and we can arrange your drop-off on the island.

Are all tours private? Can I have a guide in my language?

Yes. Every tour booked on our website is private: just you and your group, with a driver who is also your English-speaking guide. On request, we provide licensed guides in German, Dutch, French, Italian or Spanish, for an extra Rp 1,000,000 per day.

Safety and expectations

Is it safe to visit Bromo and Ijen?

Both are active volcanoes, monitored by Indonesia’s volcano authorities, and the national parks close access when activity or weather makes it unsafe. We check the official status before every trip. For Ijen we arrange your gas mask, torch and the required health certificate. At Bromo, bring a scarf or mask against the dust.

What happens if Bromo or Ijen is closed?

An alternative is always ready. If Bromo is closed, we take you to Madakaripura Waterfall instead. If Ijen is closed, you can choose from Baluran National Park at sunset, snorkelling at Menjangan Island, the Djawatan forest, releasing baby turtles at Sukamade beach, or the sunset at Red Island.

How hard is the Ijen hike?

It’s the most demanding part of the trip: about 3–4 km uphill on a steep path, roughly 1–1.5 hours, often cold at the start. The way down to the blue fire is steep and rocky, and only open when the park allows it. If you need help, a hand-pulled trolley, which locals jokingly call the “Lamborghini”, can carry you part of the way. It’s available on request, at Rp 1,500,000 per person for the way up and down.

Is the blue fire guaranteed?

No, and we will never promise it. The blue fire depends on the gas and the weather, and it’s only visible before dawn. Even on nights when it’s faint, many guests say the sunrise over Ijen’s turquoise acid lake was their highlight.

Is Ijen one of only two places in the world with blue fire?

It’s a popular myth. Blue sulphur flames also appear at Dallol in Ethiopia and during wildfires in Yellowstone. What sets Ijen apart is scale: it’s the largest blue-fire area in the world.

Will it be crowded?

Bromo and Ijen are popular, especially in high season and during Indonesian holidays. We plan around the crowds. In high season, we watch the sunrise from the Bromo crater first, then go up to King Kong Hill once the crowds have left. At Ijen, we aim to start early.

Borobudur

Can I still climb Borobudur and see the sunrise from the temple?

Often, yes. Since 2023 the temple can only be climbed with a guide, with a daily limit on visitors, special sandals provided, and a short time on the upper terraces. Whether you may go up on the day is decided by the temple authority, so we can’t promise it. Our Borobudur Sunrise Climb tour includes the temple ticket, which is required either way, and you can choose to watch the sunrise from Setumbu hill instead. Places are limited, so book early.

Booking

What’s included, how do I pay, and can I cancel?

Every tour includes private transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, the entrance tickets in the programme, drinking water and travel insurance. Multi-day tours add hotels and meals, and Ijen tours add a gas mask, torch and health certificate. The exact list is on each tour page. You can pay by Visa, Mastercard or bank transfer. Cancellation is free up to 30 days before your trip. After that, a fee applies, starting at 20% and rising as your date gets closer.
